My site was moved to new infrastructure today by my hosting company.
They did warn back in March they were going to this.
Got an email today saying it had all been done.

When I checked .. yellow screen of death for all the database sections. So I check the files using the new control panel.

Whatever has done the migration had taken out any .config file with a database connection string in it. thats the whole file not just the line with connection string... the whole .config file.

WTF... any Fortunately I had backups. few tweaks and all seems good.

Support was disappointing.. they wanted me to complete their new security steps :S

Hmmm maybe I should start looking for another host.

ASPNETCOMPILER : warning CS1668: Invalid search path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Lib' specified in 'LIB environment variable' -- 'The system cannot find the path specified.

if you encounter this on a machine, especially one being used a build machine where you do not have Visual studio installed. Check that there is a Lib folder setup in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\’

If you have done a custom install of the windows sdk then I think the folder called Lib gets missed but is still required.

Just add a Folder called ‘Lib’ and all should be good.

Power cut in Darford and Erith...Blogging in the dark.

As i write this, there is still no power in most of the Erith area. Some of the flats and building by the river have their lights on but most of the houses are still in darkness.

A power cut was caused by vandals damaging a power station near Dartford.

I will have to be quick there is not much power in this battery.

EDF energy reckon it could up to 36 hours before power is restored !!!!!

I hope its back on by morning.

Setting up Nunit in Asp.Net MVC Project

So you have downloaded ASP.NET MVC. Chosen File -> New project and setup your new Asp.NET MVC project.

How do you get NUNIT to appear in the Test Project Dropdownlist.

Rebuild the Project using devenv /setup and you are good to go

Windows Workflow Project Templates not available in VS2005 ?

While trying to install the .Net 3 components the Windows Workflow.exe download seemed to run the sdk installer. I continued on and installed everyting else. Fired up Vs2005 and could not find a Windows Workflow Project Template.

The Solution is to change the windows workflow exe to a zip, unzip the files to a folder and run the set up. The Installer should look different.

Now I can see the project templates

New Subsonic for Christmas

Import and Export Menus not appearing in DNN, Enabling IPortable.

Have had this serious problem. I could not enable the Import and Export Menu Items on a Module I have been working on.

I had tried all types of configuration making the controller class inherit IPortable, Making the Module .ascx inherit IPortable.

The Solution is you need to ensure the Module manifest file (.dnn file) has a <businesscontrollerclass></businesscontrollerclass> section and that you declare the full name of your class and the name of Assembly you can find it in.

You can create and deploy modules without a <businesscontrollerclass></businesscontrollerclass> in the Module manifest file. But to take advantage of the IPortable, ISearchable and IUpgradable Interfaces, you must declare it.

It would be nice if Module Definition Validator found at the bottom of the Host -> Modules page could warn you if it is missing. I think I will add it to the wishlist.

Just seen at Larkware news. JetBrains have a new version of Resharper. This is for VS2005 only.
There has been a Unit Testing tool inside Resharper for the last version or so. JetBrains have now decided to offer this unit test runner as a free addin .

I have downloaded the new version but have not checked it out yet.

On the subject of cool addins for Visual Studio . Mark Miller has indicated that a new version of code rush is coming soon. Although his metrics are a little interesting.

PreCompile Issue - CS0030: Cannot convert type 'ASP.login_aspx' to 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Login'

I am sure many developers have run into the classic "It works on my machine" problem. This one was a little weird. I have been working on a new solution with ASP.NET 2.0. Running locally using the In built Cassini Web Server all is fine. Once I moved the solution over to IIS I got the following Message with the Yellow Screen of Death.

Compiler Error Message: CS0030: Cannot convert type 'ASP.login_aspx' to 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Login'

The Solution:

Change the Name of the Codebehind Class Associated with the Login.aspx, by default Vs2005 will name the code-behind class the same name as your .aspx or ascx file. Obviously this clashes with the inbuilt login control.

What make this unusal is that cassini seems to be able to deal with the error. I have not investigated to see if it ignores the exception, but from searches on the web. The PreCompile option when building the project seems to be part of the problem. So I changed the name of my page and all is good

New phone from Santa

Santa came a little early this year. This is my first post via my new spv m3100. Its a PocketPc Phone with a fairly decent qwerty thumbboard and more importantly wifi built in so I can blog from my armchair, as its a little cold to sit in the garden.

I have yet to try the camera but am enjoying the mobile browsing experience.

Loving Subsonic

I am currently using Subsonic by Rob Conery for an Asp.Net project and loving the fact that I do not have to write a line of Data Access code. I edit my Database tables, build in Vs2005 and go. Subsonic takes some of the tenets of Ruby on Rails and mixes it with what is good in Vs2005.

Rob has published some documentation on Subsonic. Its not exactly a manual but enough information to provide guidance on the conventions of Subsonic.

There is loads more information at the Codeplex site. If you are doing ASP.NET 2.0 Development and need to get a few steps ahead early in your development cycle then check it out.
